At just 5 1/2 years old, Brixton was diagnosed with Rhabdomysarcoma in the summer of 2017. RMS is a type of sarcoma made up of cells that normally develop into skeletal (voluntary) muscles. The next year or so was filled with countless hospital stays, doctor visits, pokes, prods, scans, surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation. Brixton powered through the intense treatment regimen and by November 2018, she reached NED status (No Evidence of Disease).
The plan was to follow-up with PET scans every 3 months, just to be sure. He first scans, 3 months after being declared cancer-free, showed 2 completely new spots. Brixton and her family were heartbroken. They immediately had the spots biopsied and were given devastating news- she relapsed- it was Rhabdomyosarcoma again. They went headfirst into rounds of chemotherapy, but this time, treatment wasn’t working. More spots showed and the previous spots were growing!
After consultations with new doctors and new research, Brixton started IV Chemo and is currently receiving proton radiation therapy at the Maryland Proton Treatment Center. After that, she will have scans followed by a re-evaluation to determine the next course of action. There is a clinical trial that Brixton may qualify for that has shown some promise.
Follow her Journey. God Bless!
Special Treat: Brixton is our May 2019 Sam’s Kid. We are sending her and her family to dinner and a movie. We also gave Brixton stylized Lego Friends, something she will love.
